Flying the Friendly Skies
Vol 14

If you have been keeping up with Commontary On... you can probably tell that I've scaled down the number of articles I've written for it. Not that I haven't been writing, but I'm been doing writing of other types writing. Articles for the local paper, my new book, etc. So with all this going on, I've decided to write one article a month for Commontary On....Hope that's okay.

I wrote a couple of articles recently while on the plane. I think I was traveling from, well, to be honest, I don't actually remember. I've done so much traveling in the last 6 months. Mostly ever since I wrote A Titan of a Man.

I'm not complaining in any way. I think I'm getting better at it, flying that is. I'm packing lighter, prepared better with food to eat and plenty of reading material, carrying less in my carry-ons, and enjoying the people I meet.

Most recently, on a trip from Maryland back to California, I was seated next to a surfing teacher/actor from Huntington Beach. Now, what an interesting guy. He had a true love for Italy, likes to read, and play the guitar.

On another trip I met a man who was a book editor of a newspaper in Alabama. We conversed off and on about our jobs and our families. Of course, I had to tell him about my Remember the Titans connection.

It's interesting how so many people hate to fly and just won't do it. I've come to enjoy it and my only regret is interrupting my regular schedule for a little while and having to leave people behind back home.

Is flying safe? Well, probably about as safe as driving a car they say. I'm not afraid to fly or die and don't have the time to bus it or train it the way I did in the past. Most of the time, I need to get where I'm going and back home fast. Would I trade the friendly skies? NOPE! Despite all the safety precautions, it's worth it, especially the meeting of friendly people along the way.
